Two honest observations. First, Diamond Maintenance at ~$0.95/lb is the cheapest big-bag food we track — 40 lb for under $38 is the volume play. Second, and this surprises people: an 18 lb bag of Pedigree (~$0.94/lb) undercuts most 40 lb bags on the list. Bag size lowers cost per pound within a brand, but brand tier moves the number more. If you are optimizing purely on cost per pound, the cheapest value-brand bag beats the biggest premium-brand bag every time.

The practical big-bag rule stands, though: whatever food your dog eats, the largest bag of that food is nearly always its cheapest form — the Purina ONE Chicken & Rice 40 lb bag (~$1.47/lb) is meaningfully cheaper per pound than the same formula's 16.5 lb bag (~$1.82/lb), a 19% discount for buying big.

The caveat at the top of the chart

The ~$14.99/lb entry is air-dried food, and comparing it per-pound against kibble overstates the gap. Air-dried food has the moisture removed, so it is far more calorie-dense — you feed much less by weight, and the real cost per feeding is closer than the raw number suggests.
