Cheapest Cat Food: Real Cost Per Pound

Cat food is a forever purchase — a cat eats every day for 15 years or so — which makes it exactly the kind of spending where per-unit math quietly compounds. Bags on the shelf run from 3 lb to 40 lb and from $9 to $42, so the sticker tells you nothing. The honest number is cost per pound, and in dry cat food it spans nearly 5x.

The ranking, by real cost per pound

A large value bag anchors the bottom of the market: Friskies 22 lb at ~$0.89 per lb is the cheapest cat food we track. At the other end, a 3.4 lb bag of grain-free boutique food costs ~$4.29 per lb — nearly five times as much.

What the spread costs you per year

A typical 10 lb indoor cat eats roughly 4 lb of dry food a month — call it 50 lb a year. At that rate:

• Friskies at ~$0.89/lb → about $45 a year
• Purina ONE at ~$1.90/lb → about $95 a year
• Boutique grain-free at ~$4.29/lb → about $215 a year

The gap between the cheapest and priciest dry food on our list is real money, but notice it is smaller than in high-volume categories like diapers — a cat simply does not eat that many pounds. The practical takeaway: moving within a tier costs little (Meow Mix vs Cat Chow is pennies a week), but the value-to-boutique jump roughly quintuples the bill.

The small-bag penalty

The clearest pattern in the table is what bag size does to the same food. Fancy Feast Filet Mignon dry costs ~$2.71 per lb in the 7 lb bag and ~$3.04 per lb in the 3 lb bag — a 12% surcharge for the smaller package of the identical formula. Meow Mix shows it too: the 6.3 lb Original bag (~$1.43/lb) costs 10% more per pound than the 20 lb Tender Centers bag (~$1.30/lb).

The rule of thumb: buy the biggest bag your cat will finish in about 4–6 weeks after opening. Dry food goes stale and the fats oxidize once opened, so a 40 lb bag only makes sense for multi-cat homes — or if you decant into an airtight container.

The dry-vs-wet caveat

Everything in our table is dry food, and that is deliberate. Wet food is roughly 75–80% water; dry food is about 10%. Per pound, you are mostly buying water in a can, so a per-lb comparison between formats is meaningless — wet food at $3 per lb is not "cheaper" than dry at $4.29 per lb; per calorie it is several times more expensive. Compare dry to dry and wet to wet, and if your cat needs wet food (hydration, urinary health, vet's advice), treat that as a separate budget line rather than a value play.

How to buy cat food like an accountant

• Prefer the big bag of a food your cat already accepts. The 13–22 lb size is the sweet spot for one-cat homes.
• Switch tiers deliberately, not accidentally. If you feed boutique food, do it because your cat needs it — not because a small bag hid the per-pound price.
• Transition slowly. Cats are famously picky; mix a new (cheaper) food in over 7–10 days, and abandon the experiment if it is refused — an uneaten bargain is 100% waste.
