How to tell if a perfume is fake

Every other guide lists checks you can only run after the bottle arrives. The one test that works before you pay is arithmetic: divide the price by the bottle size to get cost per ml, then compare it to what that house genuinely sells for. Across the 1461 designer bottles we track, Roja Parfums sits near $7.70/ml. A sealed bottle of it offered at a fraction of that is not a clearance find — no authorised seller can go there and still make money.

What authentic actually costs, per ml

Live from the 1461 designer bottles we price-check. Read the low column as the honest floor — that is usually a big bottle or a quiet discount, not a fake. It is the listings well belowa house’s floor that should stop you.

Real bottles we price-check, cheapest per ml

Live listings — the same per-ml math, applied to what is actually on sale.

Run the test in ten seconds

  1. Find the bottle size in ml. If the listing only gives fl oz, multiply by 29.57 — 1.7 oz is 50 ml, 3.4 oz is 100 ml.
  2. Divide the asking price by that number. That is the cost per ml.
  3. Compare it to the house’s row above. Inside or slightly under the band: plausible. Far under the low column on a current, popular scent in a standard size: walk away.

The test has one honest limit. A 200 ml bottle is genuinely cheaper per ml than a 30 ml one, and an eau de toilette is cheaper than the eau de parfum wearing the same name — so compare like with like before calling anything suspicious. The EDT vs EDP difference →

Once it arrives: what to check

The price test cannot be the only one, because a careful counterfeiter prices near the market to stay believable. Four checks on the physical bottle:

  • Batch code. Printed or etched on both box and bottle, and the two must match. A missing code, or a sticker instead of a printed one, is the strongest single signal. Paste the code into a free checker like CheckFresh or CheckCosmetic to read the manufacture date: a code that returns nothing, or a date years before the scent was released, is a counterfeit tell the packaging alone can hide.
  • Cellophane. Factory wrap is tight with neat machine folds. Loose, wrinkled or hand-taped film means the box was opened.
  • Glass and sprayer. Genuine bottles are heavy, with an even base and a sprayer that seats without wobble. Seams, bubbles or a rattling cap point the other way.
  • The first spray. A fake usually reads as sharp alcohol and collapses within an hour; a genuine fragrance opens, settles and stays for hours.

Frequently asked

Can you tell a perfume is fake from the price?

Often, yes — before you pay, which is the only moment it helps. Work out the price per ml (price ÷ bottle size in ml) and compare it to what the house actually sells for. Across the 1461 designer bottles we track, Roja Parfums runs about $7.70 per ml. A sealed 100 ml bottle offered at a fraction of its house's normal per-ml is not a clearance deal; genuine stock does not reach that price, because the seller would be losing money on every unit.

Is a cheap perfume always fake?

No, and this is where the price test gets misused. Three things make an authentic bottle genuinely cheap: a big bottle (per ml almost always falls as size rises), a discontinued or reformulated scent being cleared, and an eau de toilette being compared against the eau de parfum of the same name. Check those first. What should worry you is a *current, popular* fragrance in a *standard* size at a price no authorised seller could match.

What are the physical signs of a fake perfume?

After delivery: the cellophane on a genuine box is tight and machine-folded, not loose or hand-taped; the batch code is printed or laser-etched on both the box and the bottle and the two must match; the glass is heavy with an evenly seated, unwobbly sprayer; and the liquid is clear, not cloudy or noticeably tinted. Fakes also tend to smell strongly of alcohol on first spray and fade within an hour.

Where do fake perfumes usually come from?

Third-party marketplace sellers rather than the brand or the retailer itself. Before buying, check who actually ships and sells the item — not just the brand name on the listing. Prices well under the market, a seller with little history, and stock photos that do not match the described size are the pattern to avoid.
