Newborns feed constantly and their digestion is immature, so the first weeks are the heaviest. It eases as they grow.

Every baby is different — breastfed newborns often go through more in the early weeks, and night-time changes taper as they start sleeping longer. Use these as planning numbers, not rules.

How many to buy before the baby arrives

The most common newborn-diaper mistake is over-buying the smallest size. Newborn (size N) fits roughly 0–10 lb, and many babies are only in it for 2–4 weeks — some larger babies skip it entirely and start in size 1.

A safe starter kit:

• 1 box of Newborn (size N) — around 120–140 count.
• 1–2 boxes of Size 1 — you'll move into these fast.
• Hold off on bulk-buying beyond that until you know how fast your baby grows.

Keep the receipts. Unopened boxes are usually returnable or exchangeable for a bigger size, and most people end up swapping down their newborn stash.

What it actually costs

Diapers are the single biggest recurring baby cost, and the price swings more than people expect — which is exactly why cost per diaper matters more than the box price.

At roughly 300 diapers in the first month, the monthly bill depends entirely on the per-diaper price you pay:

• Budget / store brands (~$0.11–0.20 per diaper): about $33–$60 a month in the

newborn stage.

• Premium / subscription brands (~$0.35–0.57 per diaper): about **$105–$170 a

month**.

The levers that cut the diaper bill

• Buy the biggest box of a size your baby is comfortably in — cost per diaper falls

steadily with count.

• Store brands run about half the per-diaper price of premium and, for daytime

changes, are usually plenty.

• Don't over-buy a size they'll outgrow in two weeks — a giant box you can't use is

not a deal.
