Diaper Cost Comparison by Size: What Each Size Really Costs Per Diaper

Diaper boxes hide a pattern that only shows up when you divide price by count: the cost per diaper climbs with the size number. A box costs roughly the same whether it holds Size 2 or Size 7 — but the count drops from 186 to 88, and your per-diaper price more than doubles along the way.

Here is what each size actually costs in the boxes we track, the brand tiers within each size, and how subscriptions change the math.

Cost per diaper, size by size

All numbers are real box price ÷ count from our live catalog:

The cleanest illustration of the climb is a single line across sizes. Huggies Little Movers: ~$0.37 per diaper in Size 4 → ~$0.43 in Size 5 → ~$0.62 in Size 7. Luvs Platinum: ~$0.21 in Size 4 → ~$0.25 in Size 5. Pampers Baby Dry: ~$0.32 in Size 4 → ~$0.34 in Size 5. Same brand, same construction — the size number alone adds 10–20% per step, and the jump to the biggest sizes is steeper.

Our catalog currently tracks Sizes 2, 4, 5, and 7 — the highest-volume sizes. For the gaps, the same-line pattern is your guide: Size 1 prices land near Size 2, Size 3 sits just under the Size 4 number for the same line, and Size 6 falls between Size 5 and Size 7.

The brand tiers (they hold at every size)

Within any single size, the spread between brands is far bigger than the spread between sizes:

• Value tier — ~$0.21–$0.31: Luvs, Amazon's Mama Bear (~$0.27 in both Size 4 and Size 5), Kirkland Signature (~$0.30 Size 4, ~$0.39 Size 5), Earth & Eden (~$0.31). These win the per-diaper math every time they show up.
• Mainstream tier — ~$0.32–$0.43: Pampers Baby Dry (~$0.32–$0.34), Amore (~$0.34), Cruisers 360 (~$0.35), Swaddlers (~$0.37–$0.38), Huggies Little Snugglers and Little Movers (~$0.37–$0.43).
• Premium & eco tier — ~$0.43–$0.80: Huggies Skin Essentials (~$0.42–$0.49), The Honest Company (~$0.43–$0.67), Pampers Pure (~$0.50), Bambo Nature eco (~$0.50), boutique organic labels up to ~$0.80.

One trap that lives inside every tier: the small pack. A 17–19 count Pampers pack works out to $0.50–$0.64 per diaper — mainstream diapers at premium prices, purely because of the count. Small packs are for trying a brand, not for stocking up.

Subscribe & Save vs one-time: the real math

Every price above is a one-time cart price. Amazon's Subscribe & Save typically takes 5% off, rising to 15% when you run five or more subscriptions in a month — and on diapers, that discount lands on a big recurring line item:

• Luvs Size 4 at ~$0.21 → ~$0.18–$0.20 subscribed
• Pampers Baby Dry Size 5 at ~$0.34 → ~$0.29–$0.32 subscribed
• Huggies Little Movers Size 5 at ~$0.43 → ~$0.37–$0.41 subscribed

Two honest caveats. First, a subscribed mainstream brand still does not beat a one-time value brand — Pampers at ~$0.29 subscribed remains ~40% dearer than Luvs at ~$0.21 unsubscribed. The discount narrows tiers; it does not reorder them. Second, size timing is the diaper subscription's weak point. Babies change sizes on their own schedule, and an auto-shipped case of outgrown diapers erases months of 15% savings. The practical play: subscribe to the size your baby is growing into once they are mid-range in the current one, and keep the delivery interval short.

How to use the size table

• Budget by size, not by brand memory. The same brand that cost you $0.32 per diaper in Size 4 will cost ~$0.43 by Size 5 — plan for the climb.
• Divide price by count, always. It is the only number that compares a 198-count Luvs box to a 58-count club pack. Our unit price calculator does it instantly.
• Test value brands at each size change. Fit changes as your baby grows — the brand that leaked in Size 2 may be fine in Size 4, and it is 2–3x cheaper.
