How to buy toothpaste for less

Toothpaste is a multipack game: the same tube can cost 4× more per ounce depending on how many are in the box. Cost per ounce is the number — and beyond fluoride, most of what you pay extra for is a claim.

  • Compare cost per ounce across the whole box, not the tube. A 5-tube pack lands near $0.42/oz; a single premium whitening tube can be $2.70/oz — same paste category, 6× the price.
  • Fluoride is the part that works. The ADA-accepted, fluoride-containing basics protect teeth as well as the expensive tiers; whitening, charcoal and "advanced" formulas mostly buy you marketing.
  • Sensitivity paste is the one real premium worth paying — potassium nitrate / stannous fluoride formulas do something a basic paste does not. If you don’t have sensitive teeth, you’re paying for nothing.
  • Buy the multipack of a paste you already use. Toothpaste keeps for years, and the per-ounce cost only ever falls with box size.
