• •Compare cost per ml, not bottle price. A 15 ml luxury serum at $90 is $6.00/ml; a 50 ml one at $30 is $0.60/ml — a 10× difference that the sticker price completely conceals.
• •The active and its percentage do the work, not the price. A 1% retinol is a 1% retinol. Above a competent formulation you are buying texture, scent, packaging and brand — which is a legitimate thing to buy, but know that is what it is.
• •Commodity actives are the worst place to pay a premium. Vitamin C, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are cheap to formulate and available at low cost per ml from serious brands; that is where the luxury markup is hardest to defend.
• •Buy the bigger size of something you have already tested — per-ml cost always falls with size, and skincare you abandon after two uses is the most expensive skincare there is.
• •Compare within a product type. A cleanser you rinse off in ten seconds and a serum you leave on all night should not be judged on the same per-ml scale — use the type filters above.
